Library Board Meeting

Highlights

  • ✅ Approved the consent agenda (May minutes + current agenda) and welcomed Councilor Michelle McCall Wallace, who shared council’s new pillars and the planned boards-and-commissions reporting cadence.
  • 🗓️ Learned that the library’s annual work session with council is slated for September, and beginning in 2026 quarterly updates will keep council and the board in sync on strategic goals.
  • 💬 Board members asked how the city approaches long-term revenue planning; Councilor Pen explained that each board, staff, and council collaborates on grants, priorities, and “wants vs. needs” as part of the new pillar process.
  • 🏛️ Members noted the community’s pride in the recently renovated library and reiterated the board’s role in championing outreach alongside Friends groups and volunteers.

Notes

  • Introductions & Council Liaison Update

    • Councilor Michelle McCall Wallace introduced herself, recapped her history with the city, and praised the library’s reputation.
    • She outlined council’s four pillars: (1) quality-of-life amenities, (2) transportation/mobility, (3) safe & resilient community, (4) transparent communication. To support those, council will hold annual work sessions with every board and request quarterly updates (library board’s 2025 work session lands in September).
  • Board Discussion

    • Members shared backgrounds (inside/outside city, education sector, long-term volunteers) and talked about term limits; several are finishing partial terms and plan to reapply.
    • Larry Gonzalez asked who owns long-range funding strategies. Councilor Pen said it’s a shared effort—boards pursue grants within their missions, staff look for operational efficiencies, and council sets annual priorities so the city can evaluate “wants vs. needs.”
  • Operational Notes

    • No public comments were received. Board Members celebrated the successful library renovation and invited everyone to the next meeting (June 18).

Follow-Ups

  • Library board to prepare for the September work session by aligning its strategic goals and quarterly reporting template with council’s pillars.
  • City staff/council to distribute the boards-and-commissions reporting schedule so members know when quarterly updates are due.
  • Board members interested in reappointment to submit applications before their terms end (June) to avoid gaps on the roster.
